I could spend the next few minutes telling you all about the dozens of Malibu real estate sales in the $5-$15m range that have transacted in the last few months…exciting stuff pointing to a robust real estate market, but those types of numbers are almost becoming so commonplace that I’m going to skip it and move straight to the big number deal that has Malibu beach house owner’s abuzz. Many people with wealth collect cars, some art, and others it’s sprawling ranches, but only one person in the world collects beach houses on Carbon Beach. It’s no secret that Oracle’s Larry Ellison has a taste for Malibu real estate and has gone about purchasing dozens of prime properties, almost exclusively on Carbon Beach. Just when you think his Malibu appetite for real estate is satiated, he one ups himself and purchases something even grander and better than before. His latest addition to his collection cost $37m and for that he got an amazing home on a double lot with 115 feet of beachfront in the heart of Malibu.
From the MLS ” Michael Graves was commissioned to design an estate on the crown jewel of Malibu, Carbon Beach, on appox. 151 ft of beach frontage. The home is composed of 3 pavilions & is a blend of contemporary & traditional architecture, portraying both the feeling of modernism & classicism. You enter the main house through a soaring 3 story rotunda with an elaborate detailed skylight. You are swept into the heart of the living space by the expansive ocean view. The screening pavilion is a barreled vaulted structure covered with a copper roof & copper awnings. This room serves as a family den when not being used for screenings. This building can be appreciated as a stand-alone piece of art. The third pavilion of the compound is the two story gst house. It consists of a generous LR, built in bar, lavish BD & BA, additional BD/gym & BA downstairs. Upstairs there’s a bedroom suite & sunning deck. The gst house opens to a covered veranda bordering the pool flanked by a gazebo for outdoor dining.
So next time you are at Nobu, raise your glass and toast Mr. Ellison for his real estate passion that boosts the value of our Malibu’s beach properties…. and especially for opening the new  Malibu location for Nobu, which would not exist if he hadn’t decided to insure that he could walk to the best restaurant in Malibu from any of his properties!

  1. t was a disastrous leasing season. Seriously, who would want to Hoover all that? Of course, a bad deal for a homeowner means a good deal for someone looking for temporary refuge by the beach.
