Here is the low down on Malibu rentals. There are two types on rentals in Malibu. There are the small places the students and locals look for that are generally under $10k and go really fast if they are nice. In order to be on top of these you really need an auto notification program that sends you an email the second one gets listed in the MLS. If you have a Blackberry or Iphone you will get an email that will give you first shot at making the appointment before someone else does. The second type of Malibu rental is more geared towards short term vacations. These vacation rentals start coming on the market in Feb and will disappear by May. Most people will want to rent a beach house for three months but the owners will charge premium prices for June, July, Aug, and Sep. It is not unusual to see the rental prices double for those months. A beach house rental asking $20k per month will be $40k in the summer. Sometimes June and Sept can be negotiated for less than double especially if you take 4 months.
