New Life Guard Towers Invade The Malibu Beaches
A pair of new life guard towers were delivered to Leo Carillo Beach this week but it’s hard to say if the look any better than the old ones. The traditional wood structures have been replaced with a modern space pod that looks like it was popped out of a mold at a gondola factory. The structures have the architectual curved roof that can be seen all over Venice and have unusual angular protrusions towards the top of the side walls. The structures look like they’d be more at home in Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon where artificial is natural.
I’m already missing the old weathered wood towers that have a distinctive patina only the sea and salt air can create.

I saw these today. I’m interested in seeing what they look like when opened up. It is unfortunately a rather unfathomable design in that there’s no obvious need for the various protruding shapes. I thought at first that the wooden towers had been shrink wrapped for the winter season like boats sometimes are. Also I don’t think the finish will look better after a few seasons of sun and weather. Is this a pilot program or is this the future?
